The secrets of wool: A guide to the different characteristics and benefits of this natural fiber

Posted by Véronick Bélanger on

As a natural fiber, wool has been used for centuries in the textile industry. It is a versatile material that can be used for clothing, household items, and even insulation. Wool is a renewable and biodegradable resource, making it an environmentally friendly choice for consumers. In this article, we will explore the different types of wool, their characteristics and the benefits of their uses.

Wool as a natural fiber

Wool is a natural fiber that comes from the fleece of sheep, goats and other animals. It is a versatile material that can be used for a variety of applications, from clothing to insulation. Wool is known for its warmth, durability, and breathability, it is a great choice for outdoor activities and extreme weather conditions.

Wool fibers are naturally corrugated, which gives them elasticity and resilience. The ripples also create tiny pockets of air, which helps insulate the body. Wool can absorb up to 30% of its weight in moisture without giving a feeling of moisture, making it a great choice for outdoor activities.

The history of wool and its importance in the textile industry

Wool has been used for centuries in the textile industry. The first traces of wool textiles date back to 1500 BC, in Egypt. In ancient times, wool was a precious commodity and was often used as a bargaining chip. In the Middle Ages, wool production became a major industry in Europe and was an important source of income for many countries.

Today, wool is still an essential part of the textile industry. Wool production is a major industry in many countries and provides employment for millions of people worldwide. Wool is used for a range of applications, from high-end fashion to everyday clothing and household items.

Understanding the different types of wool

There are many types of wool, each with its own characteristics. The most common are merino, Shetland, cashmere, and mohair. Merino wool comes from merino sheep, known for the fineness of their fibers. Shetland wool comes from Shetland sheep, whose fibers are coarse. Cashmere wool comes from the cashmere goat and is known for its softness and warmth.  Mohair comes from the goat and is known for its softness, lightness and wet, swelling appearance.  It has several qualities of wool that will be found on the market: 100% wool or pure wool, virgin wool, pure virgin wool, combed wool, and merino wool (fine and extra-fine). They all come from sheep, so what makes them different?

  1. 100% wool or pure wool: It normally contains only wool. Be careful, because this mention does not tell you if it is recycled wool, of lower quality, or if it comes from dead or sick animals. It is considered to be wool of lower quality.
  2. Virgin wool: It can come from both an adult sheep and lamb. In fact, virgin wool means that it has never been used, woven or recycled. It is of better quality and more resistant than recycled wool.
  3. The so-called "pure virgin wool" wool is exceptionally soft because it comes from the first shearing of the sheep. It is the finest and longest wool that the sheep will produce during its lifetime.
  4. Combed wool: Combed wool is wool that has passed through increasingly fine combs in order to remove the shortest fibers and the last impurities left by carding. It has been worked to offer more softness.
  5. Merino wools: This is the softest wool. It comes from the merino sheep, so it is finer and softer than that which comes from any other sheep. It can be found under the name of merino wool, fine and extra-fine merino wool.

We will also use these terms to differentiate the quality of all types of wool such as mohair and alpaca.

The differences between types of wool - texture, warmth, breathability, and durability

The texture, warmth, breathability and durability of wool vary depending on the type of wool. Merino wool is known for its softness and warmth, making it a great choice for base layers and socks. Shetland wool is coarser and less warm, it will be used for carpets cushions or for any garment that does not go directly on the skin. Cashmere wool is known for its softness and warmth, it embodies luxury.  Mohair is soft and lightweight, both for clothing and fashion accessories.

Wool is also breathable, which means it can regulate body temperature. This is because these fibers contain tiny air pockets that help insulate the body.  It is also durable, which means it can withstand wear and tear.  The wool fibers are naturally elastic and resistant.

Wool care - washing, drying and storage.

Wool care is essential to ensure the longevity of your wool items. Wool should be washed in cold water with a mild detergent. It must be dried flat to prevent it from stretching. Wool should also be kept in a cool, dry place to prevent it from becoming wet or moldy.  Feel free to refer to my blog,  How to care for and store your wool products, to learn more.

Sustainable wool production and its impact on the environment

Sustainable wool production is essential to ensure the long-term viability of the wool industry. Sustainable wool production practices include responsible land management, animal welfare and fair-trade practices. Sustainable wool production also has minimal impact on the environment, making it an eco-friendly choice for consumers.

How to identify quality wool products

Identifying quality wool products can be difficult, but there are a few things to check. Quality wool products should be made from high-quality wool fibers.  Avoid names like virgin wool or pure mohair. And look earlier, those who have the words merino, cashmere, baby mohair.  Wool should be soft and resistant, with a homogeneous texture. Quality wool products should also be well made, without loose threads or seams.
